“LOCAL HERO” AWARD
On December 3, the Conservation Law Foundation of New England bestowed their Local Hero Award on Protect South Portland at a gala event in Boston. Founding members of the group, Rachel Burger, Roberta Zuckerman and MJ Ferrier were present to receive the award, along with Taryn Hallweaver. This was one of six awards, one from each New England state. A short video (shown below) outlining our efforts to promote the Clear Skies Ordinance preceded the presentation.
The Conservation Law Foundation’s Senior Vice President, Sean Mahoney, sat with the Protect South Portland contingent during the festive dinner and accompanied the group throughout. This was emblematic of the way in which he and Ken Rumelt, of the Vermont Law School, had accompanied PSP during the long days leading up to Judge Woodcock’s decision upholding the Clear Skies Ordinance.
Joseph P Kennedy III of Massachusetts was the principal honoree of the evening. In accepting the honor, he spoke passionately about the need for all of us to take action to protect our environment and to work tirelessly and boldly to shift our economy to renewable and safe sources of energy. As MJ Ferrier said in the video, there is nothing that a determined group of people cannot accomplish together.
This award is for all the people of South Portland and beyond who made the Clear Skies Ordinance a reality.
